Cortona
"If a medieval or Renaissance merchant rode through one of the city gates today, apart from the odd changed facade or refurbishment, he would recognise his hillside town".

The Etruscan city of Cortona, one of the oldest cities in Tuscany and birthplace of three famous painters – Severini, Signorelli and Pietro da Cortona, is set 2,500 feet above the Valdichiana. The winding ladder-like ancient streets are very steep and although the stone architecture gives an austere appearance to the town, this is deceptive as it is a very special, friendly place. Shops are usually open from 8 until 1pm then from 5 – 8pm. In the evening the passegiata is highly entertaining with everyone from O to 90 dressed up to the nines, parading in their finery. For spectacular views of the surrounding country, walk along the Parterre that leads from the Giardino Pubblico or catch the breathtaking panoramic view from Piazza Garibaldi at the entrance to Via Nazionale. Camucia, a modern town, is just at the foot of the hill that ultimately leads up to Cortona and is useful for supermarkets, with a huge market every Thursday morning. Cortona's own market takes place every Saturday in Piazza Signorelli.
